Coaches Training Tips: Dribbling

Coaching Tips For Dribbling

Ages U6-U8

Dribbling is one of the most important things a child can learn when first learning the game of soccer. The entire game revolves around being able to dribble and control the ball with your feet. In order to develop this skill, players must use different drills and exercises to become familiar with the ball at their feet. Below is a few different drills that players can do at a younger age to begin developing and improving their skills with a ball.

Retrieve
The coach begins this drill by throwing the ball in different directions for each player. Players can use different parts of their body to bring the ball back as fast as they can. For example, dribbling the ball with both hands. After a few rounds of different ways to bring the ball back, players must only use their feet and must get the balls back to the coach as quickly as possible.

The purpose of this drill is to teach children to move towards a target and to also get to the ball as fast as they can.

Body Part Dribble
In an area about the size of a center circle, have the children each dribble a ball around while avoiding each other. Yell out body parts such as "elbows", "knees", "head" and "hands" so that the children must dribble the ball with the designated body part while still trying to avoid running into one another.

This drill teaches kids to react quickly and also to keep the ball close
so they can stop it sooner.

Hospital Tag
Create a space appropriate for the number of players. Have players dribble inside the space while trying to tag one another. Once a player is tagged 3 times, they must go to the hospital. The hospital is a space about 10-15 feet away where they will have to go to "get well". In order to re-enter the game, players must do a task (Ex: 6 toe touches on the ball). After the task is completed they may re-enter the game with a fresh start.

Hospital tag teaches players to move quickly while
avoiding other players and keeping control of the ball.

Gates Dribble
Gates are placed throughout a designated area. Make sure there are more gates than children. Gates should only be 2 feet wide. Players will have a designated time, such as 20 seconds, to see how many gates they can go through. Players must go through a different gate before returning to the same gate. Each time the game is played, players are encouraged to try and beat their previous score.

This drill encourages players to develop ball control at fast paces as well as control the ball when turning.

Firm ground, indoor, turf oh my!

As indoor season fast approaches you are faced with the big decision of what type of boot you should be wearing. There are two main deciding factors when choosing a soccer boot. First off, what type of field will you be playing on and what type of boot does my facility allow? Secondly, how much touch will my boot be seeing during games?

Firm Ground

The first type of boot you can choose is your typical firm ground cleat. This means that the out sole or bottom of the boot is made of molded studs, typically circular or bladed, that are designed to give the player maximum traction on most natural firm pitches. They are the most widely used boot and are not always allowed on artificial fields so make sure to check with the facility you will be playing at.

Indoor

These boots are widely versatile. They can be worn for play on gym floors or dry artificial fields as well as worn as everyday shoes. They feature a flat, non-marking rubber bottom to give the player a little extra grip on flat surfaces. These shoes are great for small sided futsal games.

Turf

Turf boots are often used for indoor and outdoor play. They work great on firm natural or artificial surfaces. They're out sole features durable rubber studs that are strategically placed to offer the best traction for players. They work great as indoor shoes as well as a back up pair to your outdoor boots.

After you figure out what kind of out sole you need its time to start thinking about how much touch you will need on the ball. The upper of a boot can make a huge difference in your quality of play. The upper is the part of the boot that will be making the most contact with the ball. Uppers are usually made of real leather or synthetic leather. Both provide a different touch and feel to your game. Also, many boots are treated with certain chemicals or coatings to ensure proper friction between your foot and the ball as well as provide the ability to control where the ball is placed.

The first big question to ask yourself is leather or synthetic?

Leather

Leather boots can come in two types of leather. When deciding on which type keep in mind that soft leather provides the best touch but will not last the longest. Also, most soft, natural leathers absorb water when playing on a moist pitch which in turn can effect your game.

The softest,  most expensive and most widely sought after leather for a soccer boot is Kangaroo leather. Kangaroo leather will stretch and mold to your foot better than any of the other options. It will also provide you with the best touch and fit. However, because they are so light and soft, they do not last as long as other boots and cost a lot more.

Calf skin and full grain leather boots fall in second behind Kangaroo. Calf skinned boots typically last longer due to that fact that they are a bit heavier which allows them to with stand more. They usually cost about mid-range and unfortunately will not stretch much to accommodate your feet.

Synthetic

Synthetic soccer boots are all made a little bit differently. They tend to weigh less than their leather competitors and will usually last a bit longer, but it comes at a price. Because synthetic shoes are meant to be lighter on your feet, they tend to be stiff and take longer to break in. Synthetic boots do not always offer the best touch, especially in rainy games. Synthetic boots, like leather boots, come in different price installments. The most expensive synthetic boot will be the lightest and thinnest, where as the least expensive will be a little heavier and seemingly harder to break in, sometimes causing discomfort.

It is a big decision when choosing a new boot for indoor and outdoor season. The best way to choose is to try on different styles and types to see which one fits your foot the best. Keep in mind that all brands and styles will feel differently because each boot is designed with a purpose in mind, whether it is for touch, speed, accuracy or defence.

Nike's New All Weather Conditions Control

After years and years of inclement weather diminishing the quality of touch you receive off your boot, Nike has developed a new process in order to inhibit the absorption of water in order to increase touch and dryness during rainy games.

This month Nike released their new All Conditions Control line to the public. The new line features the Mercurial Vapor VIII, CTR 360 Maestri III, Tiempo Legend IV, and the T90 Laser IV. The new line is taking your classic favorites and amping them up by providing optimal play for every condition, including snow.

The new boots are treated with an ACC substance similar to Rain-X that is used to repel water off car windshields. The ACC substance works to ensure that friction is maintained between your boot and the ball in any weather.

If you weren't in love with these boots before, you are sure to be now.

The World's Most Visible Ball - Nike Maxim Hi-Vis

Nike Maxim Hi-Vis

The new Nike Hi-Vis ball uses it's bright colors and bold design to catch every player's eye, even in low-light conditions. A scientifically tested combination of bright yellow and purple create a powerful visual statement drawing all player's eyes to the ball and it's movement.

The ball was designed to deliver a consistant and accurate strike no matter where you hit the ball. The pressure from each strike is evenly distributed across all panels on the ball for an even touch. Even with every forceful hit, the Maxim Hi-Vis has cross-linked nitrogen-expanded foam for shape retention and durability.

A five layer textured casing allows player's to deliver a more accurate shot, pass and touch. A compressed polyethylene outer layer stores energy from impacts and releases it after every strike.

The new Nike Maxim Hi-Vis ball is available in store and online at www.soccer2000.com for $150.00.

Also available in Nike's bright and bold new colors is the Nike Strike PL Hi-Vis with a retail value of $25.00 which is also available for purchase in store and online.
